Hi Jessica,
College is structured very differently than high school so it's hard to compare the two. In college you have a lot more freedom so the professors expect you to take on more responsibility. So while they don't generally give homeworks due every class or take attendance they do expect you to be keeping up with the material, so when the tests come around you are prepared. They will give you a syllabus at the start of the course so you know what you are expected to be reading and learning, I would definitely recommend keeping up and seeing the TA or professor if you find yourself getting lost.
